The banjo shown here has a 200 year old cypress neck, an "S" shaped sound hole, no tailpiece and a head held on by cut tacks. It has three long strings and one short 'thumb' string.

Based on several early images of the banjo unearthed by Pete Ross including this one on a sheet music cover from "Coal Black Rose" ca. 1828. These images show a banjo with a similar form to the banjo in "Liberty..." but with a carved peghead.
